Born and raised here in Ohio, I’ve had a passion for learning that goes back as far as I can remember. Somehow, as a 4 year old, I managed to get my parents to let me take the tests for starting kindergarten early and have been on a learning path ever since. I was never one of the kids bemoaning the fact that they had to go to school or looking forward to the day when I didn’t have to go anymore — I would’ve willingly gone anyway.
After graduating from high school and continuing on to acquire business degrees from both Miami (OH) and Ohio University and spending seven years in various roles in the business world with a telecommunications company, I decided it was time to get back to what I really loved – learning. I took a new job and a 50% pay cut to become an adult education instructor at our local vocational school. What I lost in salary I more than gained in enjoyment and job satisfaction.
That change led to jobs as a software trainer, training consultant and ultimately to my current job as a learning development consultant at American Electric Power (AEP) in Columbus, Ohio. My responsibilities include just about anything and everything that can be related to learning. In addition to the design and development of learning materials (courses, job aids, assessments, etc.) I’m also involved with the implementation and administration of our corporate Learning Management System (LMS).
As I look into the future I’m very happy to continue down this path and look forward to opportunities for sharing as the knowledge I’ve gained with the rest of our organization in some form of learning leadership role.
Outside of work, running is one of the things I really try to make time for as much as possible. I’ve run over 25 marathons or longer including a 52 mile trail run. (I like to escape to the trails any chance I get.) Otherwise my free time is usually filled spending time with my family, reading, and traveling.
